Java Edition:Any Enchantment on Any Item

Enchanted Bedrock.gif

In 12w49a (1.4.6 Snapshot), enchanted books were introduced. However, a bug[1] existed which allowed any enchantment to be to applied to any item via an anvil.

Obtaining

12w49a Anvil

In 12w49a (1.4.6 Snapshot), using an anvil the player must place the item into the first slot and the desired enchanted book in the second slot. The result slot will then have the enchanted item, taking the enchanted item will consume the players XP as intended. However, only one incompatible enchantment can be put onto an item, the enchanted items can be combined to increase the enchantments level, but two items cannot be combined to create an item with multiple enchantments as the enchantments on the first item will override the second items enchantments.

Items are only able to be enchanted with a single enchantment because they are normally unable to be enchanted, but equipment such as armor, tools, and weapons can be enchanted with any amount of compatible enchantments. However, in 12w49a (1.4.6 Snapshot) if the player attempts to apply an incompatible enchantment to an enchanted equipment item, the anvil will consume the enchanted book and the players XP. To apply an incompatible enchantment to an equipment item, the equipment must be un-enchanted, all items enchanted via the anvil are given a repair cost.

Additional information on 12w49a (1.4.6 Snapshot) enchanting:

Combining

From 12w49a (1.4.6 Snapshot) to 24w38a (present), an incompatible enchanted equipment item could be combined with a compatible enchanted equipment item. If the equipment item with the incompatible enchantment is placed into the anvils first slot, and the compatible enchanted equipment item is placed into the second slot, the enchantment from the first item with be applied to the resulting item. This only works once, as attempting to combine them again will replace the incompatible enchantment on the result item with the incompatible enchantment on the first item.

From 12w50a (1.4.6 Snapshot) onwards, the player is normally unable to combine tools and armor that have incompatible enchantments together, however there are two methods to accomplish this.

Downgrading

Downgrade2.png
Warning: Downgrading
This feature uses downgrading which can result in crashes, data loss, or corruption, and requires specific versions. Follow the page instructions carefully.

The first is to downgrade these items to a version between 12w41a (1.4.2 Snapshot) and 1.4.5. In these versions you could combine these items together, allowing items to have multiple incompatible enchantments on the same item. All items can be combined in 12w41a and 12w41b, but only equipment can be combined from 12w42a (1.4.2 Snapshot) to 1.4.5. These versions use the pre 1.8 anvil mechanics that had a higher anvil cost, making it harder to combine high level enchants.

Grindstone Enchantment Dupe

The second method utilizes enchantment duplication to duplicate enchantments from one item to another via a grindstone. This method only works on equipment, or items with durability such as armor, tools, and weapons, and the items must have the same alphanumeric ID. From 24w10a (1.20.5 Snapshot) to 24w11a (1.20.5 Snapshot), placing an item in the top slot of a grindstone, then an enchanted item in the bottom slot of the grindstone will duplicate the enchantments from the bottom item onto the top item.
