There have been a few version ranges where sword enchantments were able to be applied to axes.

Obtaining

Any Enchantment on Any Item

Downgrade2.png
Warning: Downgrading
This feature uses downgrading which can result in crashes, data loss, or corruption, and requires specific versions. Follow the page instructions carefully.

During the version 12w49a (1.4.6 Snapshot), any enchantment could be applied to any item. As such, the sword enchantments Looting 1-3, Knockback 1-2, and Fire Aspect 1-2 could be applied to axes. These can be combined by downgrading from 12w49a (1.4.6 Snapshot) to a version between 12w41b (1.4.2 Snapshot) and 1.4.5 and combining the axes with an anvil. These items will always have a repair cost.

Combat Tests

Warning: Combat Test
This feature requires Combat Test versions which may require file renaming or file deletion to load. See the Combat Test tutorial for more information.

In the versions Combat Test 4 (a fork of 1.15 Pre-release 3) and Combat Test 5 (a fork of 1.15.2 Pre-release 2), sword enchantments could be applied to axes via enchanting tables and anvils. This was changed in Combat Test 6 (a fork of 1.16.2 Pre-Release 3) which removed sword enchantments for the axe, from the enchanting table and disabled the ability to apply them via anvils[test]. In the version Combat Test 7 (a fork of 1.16.2), sword enchantments could once again be applied to axes via anvils, and in the versions Combat Test 7b (a fork of 1.16.2), Combat Test 7c (a fork of 1.16.2), Combat Test 8 (a fork of 1.16.2), Combat Test 8b (a fork of 1.16.2), and Combat Test 8c (a fork of 1.16.2) sword enchantments could once again be applied to axes via enchanting tables.

The Combat Tests allowed Looting 1-3, Knockback 1-2, Fire Aspect 1-2, and Sweeping Edge 1-3 to be applied to axes when previously only Sharpness, Smite, and Bane of Arthropods could be applied to axes. During the versions axes were able to be enchanted with an enchanting table they could be enchanted without gaining a repair cost, and were able to be obtained as mob drops from Vindicators[test] which allowed these axes to be obtained in later versions.

Trading

During these 8 Combat Tests, Journeyman and Expert Toolsmith villagers were able to sell an iron and diamond axe, and Expert Weaponsmith villagers were able to sell a diamond axe, these axes were able to have the enchantments Looting 1-3, Knockback 1-2, Fire Aspect 1-2, Sweeping Edge 1-3, Sharpness 1-5, Smite 1-5, and Bane of Arthropods 1-5 applied to the axe.

These trades are approximately the same rarity as other enchanted axes. The Toolsmith and Weaponsmith villagers will keep their trades when updating outside of these Combat Tests, and the enchantment will persist allowing these axes to be obtained in later versions.

Combos

There are many possible combinations of enchantments that can be on the axe and also have this discontinued enchantment. The axe can be wooden, stone, iron, gold, diamond, or netherite.
