Villages files were generated within the data folder of the world save folder, and stored information about the locations of generated or artificially created villages.
Obtaining
In 12w32a, villages started being tracked and saved within the villages.dat file. This file was located within the data folder of the world folder (file path <world>/data/villages.dat). In 14w02a, these villages were also able to be created in the nether and the end, and stored within villages_nether.dat and villages_end.dat, respectively. This was changed after 19w09a, with the implementation of new villager mechanics, where villages were instead stored within the poi folder.
