An unlit campfire with food is a recontinued feature that was unobtainable from 20w21a (1.16 snapshot) to 1.16 Pre-release 2. The community reacted negatively to having this building option removed and Mojang responded promptly by allowing food to be placed on unlit campfires in 1.16 Pre-release 3, recontinuing this feature. The unlit campfire will reset all cooking times to 0 and they will all resume cooking if it is lit again causing all food to pop off at the exact same time.

Obtaining

From 19w08a (1.14 snapshot), when campfires were first added, to 20w21a (1.16 snapshot) campfires would keep food on top when extinguished by water bottles or shovels (19w37a+ (1.15 snapshot)). In 20w22a (1.16 snapshot) this was changed so extinguishing the campfire would cause the food to pop off causing it to become unobtainable.[1] In 1.16 Pre-release 3, it was changed so that food could be placed directly onto unlit campfires, recontinuing the block. A bug still caused food to pop off when the campfire was extinguished however, this was fixed in 20w46a (1.17 snapshot).[2]

Possibilities

The possible foods that can go on a campfire are raw beef, raw chicken, raw rabbit, raw porkchop, raw mutton, raw cod, raw salmon, potato, and kelp. They can be placed in the four corners. As food is put in, it fills starting at slot 0 and works up to slot 3. They pop off in the order they were put in as the time to cook them runs out. This stops certain slot combinations, for example, slot 1 and slot 3 cannot be the only slots with food because the in between slot 2 must also be filled. The 7 possibilities of filled and empty slots are shown in the table below. There are a total of 8199 possible visually different campfires with food in different slots.[3] Even more possibilities can be achieved if the food has other NBT such as being renamed or given a potion tag.

Possibility Slot 0 Slot 1 Slot 2 Slot 3
1 Food Empty Empty Empty
2 Food Food Empty Empty
3 Food Food Food Empty
4 Food Food Food Food
5 Empty Food Food Food
6 Empty Empty Food Food
