Java Edition:Water Touching Lava
Until Infdev 20100617-2, lava and water did not have any block to block interactions, therefore they were be able to be placed in many invalid states. Other methods also exist in later versions but with restrictions. It may be possible to reproduce these states using update suppression[test] in later versions.
Obtaining
0.0.12a_03
In 0.0.12a_03, water could naturally generate under lava. This means the DF can not be manipulated or controlled.
Infdev
Up to Infdev 20100615, below Y 0 there is an infinite lava "sea". Placing sand directly above the lava sea would replace the sand with lava. Having the lava next to water would allow for water touching lava. However, Infdev 20100327 is the first version that saves in Infdev and Infdev 20100413 is the first version you can obtain sand in survival mode in Infdev.
In Infdev 20100615, buckets can be used to place water and lava next to each other and water and lava can also flow. This allows for flowing water and lava to be touching.
Water and lava touching without producing anything. Including invalid lava level in the overworld.
Downwards Flow
From Infdev 20100615 to 18w10b (1.13 snapshot) lava flowing downwards into water would not produce block interactions, allowing for lava and water to touch.
Interrupted Scheduled Tick
Using interrupted scheduled tick update suppression, the player can place water or lava and prevent the scheduled updates that would cause them to become cobblestone or obsidian. Simply leaving the game in singleplayer or closing the server in multiplayer[test] would remove these updates from unknown[test] up until Beta 1.9 Prerelease 5.
3rd Lava Level
From ≤12w50b[test] (1.4 snapshot) to 20w12a (1.16 snapshot) the third level of flowing lava created no cobblestone when contacting water.[1]
Chunk Savestating
23w13a_or_b less_interaction_updates
In 23w13a_or_b, approving the less_interaction_updates vote nearly completely removes all block interactions, including the one between water and lava.
