No Bubble Column on Soul Sand Magma Block.png

In multiple previous Minecraft versions including 18w07a, 18w07a - 18w08a and 23w13a_or_b, it has been possible to place soul sand or magma blocks beneath full blocks of water without a bubble column being created. Methods which make this possible include April Fools’ vote rules, water block glitches, and possibly Update Suppression. In addition, it was possible before bubble columns were added to the game.

Obtaining

Before Bubble Columns

Before introduction of bubble columns in 18w07a, placing soul sand/magma [1] blocks beneath full blocks of water did not create a bubble column.

Water Block Placement Glitch

In 18w07a - 18w08a[test], when bubble columns were introduced, placing 3 or more blocks around the water source immediately above soul sand or a magma block will not create a bubble column.

Warning: April Fools'
This feature requires the usage of April Fools' versions, often requiring file renaming or file deletion to load. See the help page for information on loading these versions.

In 23w13a_or_b, enabling the less_block_interactions vote rule will stop most block interactions from happening, similar to update suppression. This allows for many discontinued block combinations. In this case, simply place a block of soul sand or magma beneath a full water block. Due to the less_block_interactionsvote rule, the bubble column will not appear.
