Java Edition:Mob Holding Better Armor Than Equipped
Due to a bug in many 1.19 versions, mobs with the CanPickUpLoot
tag could hold armor that was better than what they had equipped.
Obtaining
To do this, you must give a piece of armor to the mob, for example, a leather chestplate. This way, the mob will equip the chestplate. Then, you must throw another chestplate at it. When you do so, the mob will hold the last chestplate you threw at it, whether it is of better or worse material. This allows you to have mobs holding better quality armor without equipping it.
Applicable Mobs:
- Zombie
- Drowned
- Husk
- Zombie Villager
- Skeleton
- Stray
- Wither Skeleton
This also includes the baby variants and jockey variants of mobs.
Additional Information
- Attempting with a skeleton or a stray will make them drop a bow with full durability only in 1.19.3. Certain mobs will not drop their weapons as an item, for example, the Wither Skeleton.
- If you do this glitch with a wither skeleton to replace the stone sword with leather boots, you can then give the wither skeleton a wooden sword.
Bug History
This bug is partially solved in 1.19.4, where the mobs when this bug is made will check if the armor they are holding is better or not, and if it is, they will equip the best quality one and hold the other. In 1.19.4, skeletons and strays will not drop their bow at full durability. In 1.20 the bug is fixed, making mobs unable to hold armor in their hand.
