From 14w32a through 14w32d (1.8 snapshots), attempting to place armor on an armor stand will equip the entire stack.[1] This works with overstacked armor and understacked armor, however, understacked armor gets removed in 16w32a (1.11 snapshot) and overstacked armor gets removed in 24w09a (1.20.5 snapshot).
