Minecraft Discontinued Features Wiki:Glossary

A dictionary for jargon and abbreviations found in the Minecraft Discontinued Features community. Does not cover terms directly in other articles.

• AF: Initialism for April Fools'.
• AFB: Initialism for Any Falling Block.
• Ahsdiufgauweoutnqa: Joke name for No Bubble Column on Soul Sand. Named this because when it was being named, Bluecrab2 said the discoverer can name the feature, clarifying that "if you call it ahsdiufgauweoutnqa it probably won't stick".
• Alpha ___: Informal way of declaring an invalid data value item. A misnomer applied to both Invalid Data Value Leaves ("alpha leaves") and Petrified Oak Slabs ("alpha slabs"), despite neither being obtainable in any Alpha version.
• Anvil (file format): The file format used in Minecraft in all versions 12w07a (a 1.2 snapshot) and above, notable for being the first to save biomes.
• aorb: Short for the April Fools' snapshot 23w13a_or_b.
• B Creative: Powerful debug feature accidentally left in 11w49a (a 1.1 snapshot) that allowed the player to enter Creative mode temporarily in singleplayer.
• Bedrock Breaking: Generalization of destroying unbreakable blocks in survival mode, named after bedrock, generally the most desirable unbreakable block to break.
• Betacraft: Useful launcher for playing all versions 1.5.2 and earlier, notable for its many patches to allow old versions to remain playable.
• Block Entity: Refers to the additional data some blocks have that stores complex data. Examples include chests, spawners, command blocks, and more.
• Block 36: Another name for the minecraft:moving_piston block, as it used to have the numerical id 36 before the Flattening.
• Bounty: Theoretically possible discontinued feature that is highly wanted and officially set as a target of testing in the official Discord.
• BRB: Initialism for block replacement bypass, not to be confused with brb (be right back).
• Bugrock: Nickname for the Bedrock Edition of Minecraft, derived from Bedrock Edition's tendency to break in strange ways and many infamous long standing bugs.
• b1.6tb3: Shortening of Beta 1.6 Test Build 3.
• Cheat Method: Method for obtaining a discontinued feature that requires the usage of features normally behind the cheats toggle, such as commands or creative.
• Chest Spawner: Spawner block with the block entity data of a chest. Can occur very rarely from world generation in overlapping dungeons.
• Cool Trik: Synonym for bug. It is a phrase commonly used by Rays Works when referring to fun or useful bugs.
• Cool Trik Mann: Joke name to youtuber Rays Works, combination of Cool Mann and cool trik (see above).
• CWC: Initialism for cross world commands, a powerful exploit that allows commands from one world to run in another.
• DF: Initialism for "Discontinued Feature".
• DV: Initialism for "Data Value".
• Downgrader: Player who uses downgrade discontinued methods.
• Duplicate Bug: Bug on Mojira that is just duplicating another already reported bug. These reports may bring more insight to the original report.
• Exploiter: Player who utilizes discontinued features.
• FDF: Initialism for "Future Discontinued Feature", or a feature that as of the latest version is not discontinued, but is expected to become discontinued. Usually has an associated bug report marked as confirmed on the official bug tracker.
• Fixed Bug: Bug on Mojira that is verified to be fixed.
• Flattening: Nickname for 17w47a (a 1.13 snapshot), the snapshot that replaced all numerical block ids with namespace ids. May refer to other instances of numerical ids being replaced with namespace ids.
• Forced level.dat Generation: Java Edition:World Save Insertion
• Happiness machine: Joke name to a brute force method involving repeating command blocks that continuously kill any entity that does not have the discontinued NBT sought after in testing.
• IDV: Initialism for Invalid Data Value. Usually placed in front of the name of a feature with a discontinued data value, such as Java Edition:Invalid Data Value Dirt (Item).
• Inf / Infinite Item: Misnomer for 0 and negative count items, as they can be used over 4 billion times, giving the illusion of an infinite item. However, when saved to disk or written to packets, the stack sizes are collapsed between -128 and 127, making them somewhat fragile and confusing.
• InterWorld Redstone: Rare synonym for cross world commands, used in a Tamtam video.
• Invalid Bug: Mojira bug that has been discarded for one of many reasons, including but not limited to foreign language, not enough details, or using mods. For discontinued purposes, awaiting response, incomplete, and cannot reproduce are often lumped into this category.
• Jira: The official bug tracker software used by Mojang.
• MCDF: Abbreviation for "Minecraft Discontinued Features".
• McRegion (MCR): The file format that replaced Alpha file format. Used from Beta 1.3 to 12w06a (a 1.2 snapshot), when it was replaced with the Anvil file format. Known for greatly reducing the number of files in a world folder, making copying backups much easier and greatly improving file I/O performance.
• MCW: Abbreviation for the Minecraft Wiki, the wiki for general Minecraft information.
• Missing Texture: The infamous square or cube texture with purple and black checkers. There have been other minor missing textures as well (see the texture history section on the locked chest page).
• MMC: Abbreviation for MultiMC, a popular launcher among the discontinued feature community due to it creating a separate instance for each version (useful to minimize corruption).
• Mojank: Joke term for critical and/or obvious bugs, or confusing/poor code introduced by Mojang.
• Mojira: The name of the official Minecraft bug tracker, formed from "Jira" (the name of the bug tracker software Mojang uses) and the "Mo" prefix from Mojang attached.
• Multiworld: Name sometimes given to the McRegion backup of a world left when updating to the Anvil file format. This backup can be seen if one downgrades back to pre-Anvil file format versions.
• NBTExplorer: Very popular Windows program used to view and edit the NBT of various files within Minecraft.
• Negative XP: Highly desired feature of an Experience Orb with a negative amount. These can be created with commands and would allow negative durability on any equipment due to how the enchantment Mending works, but no known non-cheat method exists to obtain this.
• Nested Shulker: Highly desired feature of a shulker box inside another shulker box, obtainable in the April Fools' snapshot 23w13a_or_b.
• obaat: Short for the April Fools' snapshot 22w13oneBlockAtATime.
• Neg / Negative: Short for negative items, sometimes used for negative durability.
• PDV: Initialism for Potentially Dangerous Version. These versions are notable for being potentially dangerous in a number of ways, such as world corruption, crashes, softlocks, and more.
• PDVT: Initialism for Preserved Data Value Transmutation.
• Polyworld: A technique for Classic and Indev that involves using external tools to join new worlds together to create a larger world. Often used to get new terrain in older worlds.
• Pre-1.8 Villager: Villager from 12w21a (a 1.3 snapshot) to 1.7.10.
• Pre-1.14 Villager: Villager from 14w02a (a 1.8 snapshot) to 19w09a (a 1.14 snapshot).
• Private Bug: Bug that results in a serious problem, such as general item duplication, that regular bug tracker users cannot view.
• Prot: Abbreviation for the enchantment Protection.
• Savescumming: Term for loading backups until you get a desired result or whenever a minor setback happens, considered cheating by some. Example uses are getting desired enchantments or villager trades.
• Sign Spawner: Spawner block with the block entity data of a sign.
• Six Sided Log: The name given to wood before its formal addition in 1.13.
• Seamless Double Stone Slab: The name given to smooth stone before its formal addition in 1.13
• Seamless Double Sandstone Slab: The name given to smooth sandstone before its formal addition in 1.13, also used to differentiate it from cut sandstone that was called smooth sandstone itself at the time
• Snap / Snapshot: Development version of Minecraft. These very often have numerous bugs and crashes.
• Spawner Chest: Chest block with the block entity data of a spawner. Can occur very rarely from world generation in overlapping dungeons.
• Structure Block Chest: Chest block with the block entity data of a structure block.
• TB3: Short for Beta 1.6 Test Build 3.
• Unenchanted Book: Synonym for a blank enchanted book.
• Unobtainable: Synonym for discontinued feature, could be considered a misnomer because discontinued features are by definition obtainable, which contradicts the definition of unobtainable (as discontinued features are obtainable, just not obtainable in all versions).
• Unobtained: Adjective for discontinued feature worlds, in reference to PuffingFishHQ's series of the same title.
• Unresolved Bug: Bug in Mojira that has not been closed and either still affects the game or is waiting for review.
• US: Abbreviation for update suppresion, very rare due to confusion with the United States.
• Useless NBT: Joke name for unobservable NBT.
• version-___: Version reuploaded by Mojang. Because the Mojang name remained identical, the community appended a discriminator to these versions. The two common discriminators are either: starting with 1 and incrementing by each known chronological version (e.g. Beta 1.3-1), or using the hour and minute of the build date of the jar (e.g. Beta 1.3-1647). Also sometimes denoted with parentheses after the version saying (pre-reupload), (reupload), (2nd reupload), etc.
• Version Path: List of interesting versions a player creates as a guide to update through. Often useful for planning to minimize version changes, or avoid potentially dangerous versions.
• WAI: Acronym for "Works As Intended" on Mojira.
• Works as Intended Bug: Bug on Mojira that was marked as works as intended.
• Water Update Suppression: Archaic name of block replacement bypass.
• WIP: Acronym for "Work In Progress".
• WMEDA: Acronym for "Wiki Marathon Extravaganza Day of Awesomeness", a monthly event held for editing this discontinued feature wiki. Sometimes jokingly referred to as "We May Eventually Do Anything" in reference to past low turn outs and frequent off-topic tangents for the monthly event.
• Won't Fix Bug: A rare resolution in Mojira where Mojang agrees it is a bug, but declares they aren't going to fix it.
• WSI: Initialism for world save insertion.
• xxw49a: A superstitious pattern that every 49th-week snapshot will result in a crazy discontinued feature. 11w49a = B Creative, 12w49a = Any Enchantment on Any Item, 15w49a = fixing Ender Dragon in Boat but due to the lack of recent discontinued features some have resorted to other patterns like the first number must be divisible by each of its digits in order for it to occur. Somewhat disproved by 20w49a's lack of discontinued features.
• 20w14~, 20w14inf, or 20w14infinite: Alternatives to 20w14∞, often used because the infinity symbol is not on most keyboards.
• 22w13obaat: Short for the April Fools' snapshot 22w13oneBlockAtATime.
