Before PuffingFishHQ

This wiki formed after the creation of PuffingFishHQ's "Unobtained" series, which popularized the concept of discontinued features.

Minecraft Begins

The development of Minecraft began on May 10, 2009,[1] and was first seen in a video released by Notch on May 13, 2009.[2]

First Known Discontinued Feature

The first discontinued feature noticed was in Classic (Pre-Classic versions were not released until 2013). The specific version was Classic 0.0.12a_03, the 6th public version of Minecraft. The bug was reported by vdgmprgrmr on May 19, 2009, 04:50:22 PM on Tigsource.[3] vdgmprgrmr reported that sometimes when water and lava touch they did not form stone. Notch responded that they should be forming stone, confirming this was a bug.[4] This was fixed in Classic 0.0.13a, discontinuing the touching liquids.[5] This feature would be later recontinued and discontinued several times. There is no evidence that vdgmprgrmr kept the discontinued blocks or updated the world.

Classic to Indev Barrier

The introduction of Indev on December 23, 2009,[6] did not include any way to update a world from Classic to the new versions. MCEdit originally was created to facilitate this update and only later became the world editing tool.[7] Many players will use third party save converters to update worlds across this boundary.

Indev Chests

Indev chests were immediately celebrated by players as they could obtain items that hadn't been obtainable before.[8][9][10][11]

First Understacked Items

The first recorded method of obtaining understacked items was on January 24, 2010 by Ladon.[12] The method was found by many other users independently in another thread. tgt114, mrfatcat, MCFUser2292, betasword, and ShnitzelKiller claim to have found these glitches on the Minecraft Forum and others commented they were able to replicate.[13] betasword in particular spent time to explain the bug, first realizing there were two separate bugs causing this and also realizing that these items likely had a negative stack size.[14]

Indev to Infdev Barrier

The introduction of Infdev on February 27, 2010,[15] did not include any way to update a world from Indev to the new versions. Third party save converters must be used to update worlds across this boundary.

Alpha World Format

The Alpha world save format was introduced on March 27, 2010.[16] From this point, later versions of the game will facilitate updating worlds to newer save formats. This constant backwards compatibility was crucial to the development of discontinued features.

Petrified Oak Slabs

When slab variants were introduced, the wooden variant had the properties of stone slabs. On April 26, 2012, 12w17a (a 1.3.1 snapshot) introduced wooden slab variants for each wooden plank variants under a new block ID, allowing wooden slabs to burn and have the proper tool type of an axe. Any wooden slabs crafted after this version are the new wooden slab, but wooden slabs created before retained the stone properties. This is likely one of the first discontinued features to be collected on a large scale, both intentionally and unintentionally.[17] These old slabs even gained their own block id in the Flattening, being renamed to petrified oak slabs. This is the only invalid data value block to be retained instead of deleted in the Flattening.

Discontinued Features Playstyle

The first known instance of what has now become known as the discontinued features playstyle (playing with the purpose to collect all discontinued features) was seen on the technical server ProtoTech on November 5, 2016, in a video in Ray's Works' series on ProtoTech.[18] The video shows obtaining features available in 1.8.1 before the server updated to 1.9.4, including non-flowing water, stationary projectiles, shears with Silk Touch, and villagers with the eye of ender sell trade. ProtoTech's efforts to collect discontinued features would later inspire PuffingFishHQ's Unobtained Series.

Discontinued Features Terminology

On June 2, 2019, SpawnChunks created a page on the Technical Minecraft Wikia called "List of Discontinued Features".[19], who also shared it on the Prototech Discord server [20]. This is the first known use of the term "discontinued feature". When later asked, SpawnChunks said he had heard the terms "discontinued blocks", "discontinued items", "discontinued mobs", and "discontinued block formations" from RaysWorks and on the Minecraft Wiki, so he simplified it to "discontinued features" when creating the wiki title.[21][22][23][24][25][26][27][28][29]

PuffingFishHQ's Unobtained Series Begins

On November 5, 2019, a YouTuber by the name of PuffingFishHQ released a video titled Getting a Spawner & End Portal Frame in vanilla Minecraft Survival!!! | Unobtained Episode 1, which introduced the idea of collecting discontinued items (referred to as unobtainable in the video). The idea was to update a world through specific versions which have specific circumstances making the collection of "unobtainable" items possible. The idea stemmed from seeing old gameplay and wanting to have that nostalgia but to make it interesting enough to entertain a modern audience. Due to that, the idea for the series sat dormant for quite some time until Puff got the idea to collect discontinued items from End Portal Frame page on the Minecraft Wiki. The series continued for 13 episodes (videos) until the series had ended. Thanks to the shoutout to the series by a YouTuber by the name of RaysWorks, the 13 episodes blew up and resulted in season 2, which had much more research.

A post made on PuffingFishHQ's Channel called many users who would later become a pivotal role in the search for more bugs and discontinued features. Many Minecraft players joined the hunt and the first major document was created on google docs. However, maintaining organization on google Docs proved to be difficult. A discord user and YouTuber by the name of Bluecrab2 had an idea to create a wiki for the unobtainable[30] Bayugoon first supported the idea 10 seconds after the initial posting.[31].Bixy[32], llyr[33], and PuffingFishHQ[34] also joined in discussion about the optimal organization of this proposed wiki soon after, arriving at the compromise to organize by feature type and version.[35][36] After the discussion, bluecrab2 sent a Miraheze request to create the wiki that was promptly approved at 17:16 UTC that day.[37] and so the Minecraft Discontinued Features Wiki was founded on May 5, 2020.

Early development (May 2020 - September 2020)

The wiki started as a Java-oriented wiki, and so the first wiki's page is a main page for the Java Edition discontinued features. This was followed by Java Edition:Bedrock (Item), Java Edition:Green Shrub, Java Edition:Silk Touch Shears, Java Edition:Barrier (Block) and Java Edition:Infinity and Mending Book/Bow.[38][39][40][41][42]. These pages were created by some of the first users to join the wiki, such as Bluecrab2MC and Bayugoon[43]

nasko222 joined PuffingFishHQ's server approximately around May 28, 2020. He introduced the concept of using a new type of version, the April Fools' version. This was initially controversial, as these versions were only meant as jokes and not to be exploited. However, they are Mojang versions and so were generally accepted. This set in an explosion of discoveries that progressed from the earliest to the most recent. Starting at 2.0, the Battle Sign, Mob Wearing Wool, and Fools' Coal were found. It was discovered that 15w14a could be updated by naming the world "AF15 Existence". In 1.RV-Pre1, Powered Black Glazed Terracotta was found. In 3D Shareware v1.34, Potion of Luck, Multishot 2-12, Uncraftable Potion, Uncraftable Tipped Arrow, Open Barrel, and God Horse were found after upgrading was found possible with the name "shareware". The largest number of discoveries were found in 20w14∞, the April Fools' snapshot that came out earlier that year, after Sl1mJ1m discovered the worlds could be updated by changing level.dat to special_level.dat. All these discoveries took place in a matter of a few days around May 30 - June 2, creating lots of excitement about all the new possibilities within the community. PuffingFishHQ decided not to use any of the new April Fools' versions, especially considering his series had already passed several of the April Fools' versions by that point. PuffingFishHQ did post a video about nasko222's world during the craze though.[44] Less obvious discontinued features, such as, phantom tipped arrows and Wild Llama Wearing Carpet would trickle in the following days.

On June 22, 2020, a discussion created was on the main page's talk page to choose an icon for the wiki.[45] The poll was meant to be a wiki-style consensus rather than a poll but upon receiving no comments by the due date of June 30, 2020, a poll was created to decide the winner.[46] Bluecrab2 had submitted 8 options for logos that were just vanilla textures. PuffingFishHQ submitted a missing texture with a yellow barrier on top of it. Finally, SlushFiend submitted the "Ultra Discontinued Block" on June 23, 2020. The original submitted icon: Wiki Icon Candidate 2.png. Slushfiend's design won overwhelmingly and continues to be the wiki's icon with some minor corrections.[47]

Sl1mJ1m came up with the idea for a voice chat call to edit the wiki together on September 9, 2020. Sl1mJ1m named this event "WMEDA" for Wiki Marathon Extravaganza Day of Awesomeness. The first WMEDA was held on September 12, 2020 and was a huge success: 276 Edits and 35 New Pages.[48] The first two WMEDAs were held on PuffingFishHQ's server and it has since become a monthly event on the MCDF Discord. For more information on WMEDA history see Project:WMEDA/Archives.

Separation from PuffingFishHQ and new wiki direction (September - November 2020)

Up until this point, all discontinued feature discussions had happened on PuffingFishHQ's server. User:Bayugoon had pushed for a separate Discontinued Feature Wiki Discord for some time to be split from the PuffingFishHQ Discord. On September 26, 2020, he posted a StrawPoll to the #unobtained-wiki channel to ask the question: "Should the discontinued wiki move to its own discord?".[49] bluecrab2 delayed the end of the poll till September 28, 2020, and voted against the poll but stated he would create the server if the vote won.[50] The vote won 11 - 2 (85% - 15%) and bluecrab2 did make the separate Discord for the wiki on September 30, 2020.[51]

On September 30, the MEE6 bot was added to the Discord.[52] The next day, on October 1, the Discord invite link was added to the wiki's main page.[53] Although, bluecrab2 had not expected anyone to find it there. Freedom_MC was the first to find the link there.[54] Next Bayugoon and then Sl1mJ1m found it on the same day.[55][56] After that, Freedom_MC posted the invite link onto PuffingFishHQ's Discord server on October 2, leading to LivingComputer, John119, scam.net, mate_amargo, FavoritoHJS, WyvernElement, Marpace, and Wax Axes joining that day.[57][58][59][60][61][62][63][64]

Originally, bluecrab2 was the only administrator on the Minecraft Discontinued Features Wiki Discord server and had no role for this position. On 17 October 2020 user Kream pinged everyone in the #non-minecraft channel because permissions had been improperly set up.[65] Seven minutes after this message was sent, bluecrab2 created the mod role and private #mods channel.[66] Bayugoon and Sl1mJ1m became the first two mods and bluecrab2 also gave himself the same mod role.

The original name of our Discord was "MC Discontinued Features Wiki". Since the Discord was exclusively wiki focused, the #announcements channel often was filled with minor changes to the wiki (for example, including every time Template:Present was updated).[67][68][69][70] However, within a month it became clear members were joining who were interested in discontinued features but not in editing the wiki. For this reason, a poll was held on November 7, 2020 to change the Discord name to just "MC Discontinued Features".[71] The poll was supportive of the name change (14 - 1) and so the name was officially changed on November 10, 2020.[72][73] The Discord retains a large section dedicated to the wiki but the broadened scope has helped the Discord become the spot for coordinating all things discontinued features related.

On 8 September 2021 PuffingFish deleted most channels on his Discord, only leaving the announcements, history, and wiki channels.[74] This removed a substantial number of messages relating to discontinued features and without any backup, lots of history was lost. PuffingFish later apologized for the deletion. The wiki channel on PuffingFishHQ's Discord Server and all the channels in the Discontinued Feature Discord server was backed up soon after this to prevent any further loss of history.[75][76]

Bedrock Merge (October 2021)

Originally, this MCDF wiki only covered the Java Edition of the game. On 19 January 2021, GTBOT created Minecraft Bedrock (+Forks) and Console Edition Discontinued Features Wiki at the domain https://mcbdiscontinued.miraheze.org (adding a 'b' for "Bedrock" to the then domain https://mcdiscontinued.miraheze.org).[77][78] On the same day, a discussion channel was made on the Discord server to discuss Bedrock Edition discontinued features in the Unobtained section called "bedrock-discussion" (now "bedrock-discussion-old") in addition to the "unobtained-discussion" which was for Java Edition.[79]

This started the first exploration of discontinued features in editions beyond Java Edition, but it was very limited.[80] Bedrock players were disappointed by the lack of research and annoyed by the hostility from Java Edition players who spammed the message "ew bugrock" in the #bedrock-discussion channel.[81][82][83][84] On 28 January 2021, the "unobtainable item" Discord was created by dust exclusively for Bedrock Edition and it became the primary location for Bedrock Edition discontinued feature discussion.[85] This Discord recorded the discontinued features it discovered in discovery channels on the Discord rather than by creating wiki articles about them.[86] By March 2021, the traffic on the #bedrock-discussion channel in the main MC Discontinued Features Discord had mostly moved to the new Discord server. A poll was held on 31 March 2021 to decide whether to keep the channel with a minimum of 1/3 votes required to keep the channel open.[87] The poll resulted in a vote for archival 11 - 3 and the channel was archived on 4 April 2021.[88] Afterwards, discussion about any edition was allowed in #unobtained-discussion but this was primarily full of Java Edition discussion.

The Minecraft Bedrock Discontinued Features wiki remained incredibly small and incomplete with a peak of around 25 articles and only 10 had useful content.[89][90] Nearly all these pages were riddled with work in progress and needs testing templates as a result of less interest in other editions and the lack of editors on the new server.

After lots of discussion, it was decided to add namespaces to the MCDF wiki to cover different editions. The Java and Bedrock namespaces were created on 9 October 2021.[91] Bayugoon (now LPT4) began working on the technical details to get multiple namespaces working such as removing the namespace from the page title and allowing the reader to search on the current namespace by default. On 16 October 2021, Porktuga (before becoming mod) suggested that since the wiki was adding Bedrock Edition, the Bedrock "unobtainable items" Discord should merge into the main MC Discontinued Features Discord.[92] Sl1mJ1m created the "Java and Bedrock Discord Merge Discussion" group chat between all the mods of the two Discord servers 10 minutes after the suggestion message. The Bedrock Discord mods agreed to the merge idea under the condition they would become mods on the joint MC Discontinued Features Discord server. A poll was announced on the MC Discontinued Features Discord later that day to decide whether to move forward with the merge.[93] The poll finished 43-13 in favor of merging and the merge was completed on 18 October 2021. dust, PRGRMR, and R2 were added as mod making 3/7 of the Discord mods from Bedrock Edition.[94] The #unobtained-discussion channel was moved to #je-discussion (later #java-discussion). Equivalent channels for all Java channels were made for Bedrock and Console in separate sections.[95] Over time, these Bedrock Discord mods became inactive and left the mod team: PRGRMR left on 24 February 2022, dust left on 22 October 2022, and R2 left on 28 March 2024.[96][97][98]

Bayugoon (now LPT4) completed the addition of the Bedrock Edition namespace on 24 October 2021. All existing discontinued feature pages were moved from the Main namespace to the Java Edition namespace. The separate Minecraft Bedrock Discontinued Features Wiki was closed and edited to point towards the now joint Java, Bedrock, and Console Edition discontinued features wiki. The Bedrock Edition namespace has since been built up especially thanks to User:FireX420 and User:CaptainRex1236 and the MC Discontinued Features Discord continues discussions in all editions of Minecraft.

Wiki Move (June - July 2023)

For many years, there have been various proposals to move the wiki to self-host. This was mainly due to problems wiki's host, Miraheze, was running into every so often, such as the notorious failure of the database cluster "db141", which resulted in a 2 month-long attempt to recover the disc's data.

In June 2023, many of the prominent Miraheze technical and community volunteers left the site, citing an unjustified action by the Trust & Safety team. This left 2 people in charge of the entire technical infrastructure, with discs being "on the verge of failure" and as no solution was in sight, on June 15, 2023, Miraheze released a statement stating they were going to shutdown it's services[99].

Not soon after the MCDF wiki admins released their own statement stating they were planning on moving to a new host to combat this issue[100]. And while the new Miraheze management reversed the decision to shutdown, [101] the wiki admins of MCDF decided to continue on their plan to move hosts[102]. Thanks to TreeIsLife having a direct contact to one of the wiki.gg staff, the wiki.gg approved the wiki on June 17, 2023 and created it on June 20, 2023. The technical details of the templates and skin on the new web site was completed due to the tireless work of Left-Eye, LPT4, and TreeIsLife who worked in the "Operation Wiki Migration!" thread under the #wiki channel.

A poll about our future subdomain was created on the Discord server on June 18, 2023, with the result being changing it from "mcdiscontinued" to just "mcdf". After some time dedicated to customizing the new wiki, the wiki.gg wiki was officially launched on July 4, 2023.

I had a cave with some water in the bottom, and lava above it, and you could see what looked like a second lava surface where the water was through the surface of the lava on the top, and the lava surface above the water was slightly lower (like normal liquid surfaces), which made it look really bad. Perhaps lava should become some kind of stone when it touches water."

  14. betasword Minecraft Forum comment: "There's two such glitches. This one: I'm assuming it's the one where you toss your blocks, and get unlimited. Basically, make it so you have an even amount of blocks left of a certain type. Start pressing Q to toss them. When you get down to zero, it'll leave a single block in your inventory that you can keep tossing. Keep doing that for a bit, then feel free to collect the ones you threw again. You'll be able to build infinitely. I'm guessing there's a small math error that puts your block count into the negative, and that's why this works. If you pick up a lot of that block again, though, it could bring it back out of the negative, so be careful. Second one: Sometimes when you break a block, and it drops miniblocks, a miniblock will get, well, caught on something, for lack of better words. It'll sit there, kind of jittering in place. You can collect that block infinitely, and it will never disappear. Ever. Though it also means you can't build there. Ever. Removing the blocks under it will have no effect whatsoever. Those are the two that I know of."

Please only vote if you play the bedrock edition. ✅ = Archive this channel. The bedrock specific discord removes the need of this channel. Discussion about bedrock will still be allowed on this server under #unobtained-discussion as well. ❎ = Keep the channel. This channel specific to the bedrock is useful and helps separate java and bedrock discussion. I would like to continue to use this channel." - bluecrab2 on 31 March 2021 in #bedrock-discussion
